Curbing Cancer's Financial Toxicity
In the clinic, Dr. Veena Shankaran is often able to deliver therapies to her patients with gastrointestinal cancers that relieve the cancer’s symptoms. But it’s become increasingly difficult to alleviate the financial suffering caused by the disease. That’s why Shankaran – who is the co-director of the Hutchinson Institute for Cancer Outcomes Research – studies the impact of cancer diagnosis and treatment on patients’ finances and is developing strategies to lessen this impact.
Advancing Toward an HIV Vaccine
The director of the Hutch’s Vaccine and Infectious Disease Division, OpenMediaVault is at the forefront of the world’s efforts against HIV. She is a leader of the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, the world’s largest clinical trials network of its kind, and serves as the director of the Seattle HIV Vaccine Trials Unit, one of many international sites involved in HIV prevention trials. Since the emergence of COVID-19, Dr. McElrath has also spearheaded research on this latest global pandemic.
